Swayam NPTEL Online Courses is an initiative funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India and executed by the top IIT's of India. AICTE has introduced a scheme wherein each student has to earn 18 or more additional credits through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Due to the challenging economy, VTU intends to prepare graduates equipped with interdisciplinary knowledge.

 

About SWAYAM

SWAYAM stands for Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds. It is India's national MOOC portal to provide the best teaching-learning resources to all. The objective behind initiating the programme is to achieve the cardinal principles of Education Policy: access, equity, and quality. In addition, SWAYAM seeks to upgrade the knowledge of the students to make them employable. Anyone can access Swayam Courses online from anywhere at any time. The SWAYAM platform hosts various courses provided by nine national coordinators, namely-AICTE, NPTEL, UGC, CEC, NCERT, NIOS, IGNOU, IIMB, NITTTR.

The courses hosted on SWAYAM are divided into four segments:

1. Video Lessons & Assignments module-wise.

2. Downloadable Reading Material

3.Quizes & Tests for Self-assessment.

4.Discussion Forum for clearing the doubts.

 

Swayam NPTEL Online Courses for VTU BE Honors

If you desire VTU BE Honours, you must complete SWAYAM NPTEL courses with a minimum total credit of 18 or more in addition to your regular academic coursework. Furthermore, you must earn your credits only by appearing in person to the proctored exam conducted by NPTEl. Also, do note that you must enrol for the SWAYAM NPTEL online courses only after registering for the VTU BE Honours course.

Swayam NPTEL Credit Transfer

UGC & AICTE have issued notifications suggesting the Universities identify the courses eligible to be transferred to the student's academic record. Once you complete your SWAYAM NPTEL courses, you must submit your certificate to the University through the Principal of your college before the end of the 8th semester to be eligible for the BE Honours qualification. The Principal will submit the list of eligible BE Honours students with total credit and corresponding MOOC certificates and CIE marks of the 8th semester. Visit the Official Swayam portal https://swayam.gov.in to register for the online courses. In this article, we shall discuss only NPTEL courses offered through the SWAYAM portal.

 

What is NPTEL?

NPTEL is also known as National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning. The IITs such as IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee and IISc have come together to create online course contents in the engineering and science stream through the NPTEL & SWAYAM platform. The Indian Institutes of Technology took the above initiative to upskill the candidates. Guess what? Anyone can enrol in NPTEL courses regardless of their age and educational qualification. NPTEL courses are web-based or online and free of charge. NPTEL offers courses in two timelines- January to May and July to November every year.

Now that we have seen the benefits NPTEL courses offer, let us jump into the NPTEL courses provided under the 12 disciplines. NPTEL offers online certification through the SWAYAM portal. NPTEL conducts online courses under 49 domains across 12 disciplines.The duration of the courses ranges between 4 weeks to 12 weeks.

NPTEL SWAYAM Login

Follow the below steps to enrol in NPTEL and login

1. Go to URL – https://swayam.gov.in/
2. Click on the Sign in / Register tab
3. Login using any of the option mentioned here
4. If you have a Google-enabled email id, you can log in through the Google option. If you wish to log in through your company email id / non-Google enabled email id then you have to create your own login.
5. Click on ‘Sign up now, create your own username password, and provide your email id there.
6. Henceforth, you will be able to log in through this username and password. You can also convert your non-Google-enabled email id to a Google-enabled email id. For creating a Google-enabled email id, go to the ‘Create your Google Account’ page. When you create a Google Account, they will ask for some personal info. Here you can find the ‘Use my current email address instead’ tab. You can provide any email id, which you wish to convert to a google enabled email id. By following the mentioned steps, your existing email id will be changed to google enabled email id.
7. After login you will be directed to the SWAYAM home page, click on the ‘All Course’ tab
8. On the left-hand side, you can see the 'filter' option. Here, under that National Coordinator tab, select NPTEL. On the right-side panel, the upcoming courses will be displayed.
9. Please select the course you want to join. Within the course page, some basic course information such as course tenure, exam date, Prof name and institute name etc. are given.
10. After going through the provided information, you may also choose to watch the INTRO video. Next, click on the JOIN button. Next, fill in all relevant information.
11. IMPORTANT: Select profession as ‘employed’.
12. In ‘employment details’ select ‘yes’ in the drop-down if your employer is ‘Part of swayam industrial association’. Here, please select the name of the company diligently.
13. Please go through the details given at the bottom of the page & Click on the ‘I agree’ checkboxes.
14. Click on SUBMIT / JOIN button. You will see that a confirmation message is displayed on the course page. A confirmation email will also be sent to your registered email address.

NOTE: Please use the same email id throughout the course run. Use this email id to submit Assignments and to register for exams.

NPTEL Online Course Certificate

NPTEL certificate is given to you on three levels based on the level of your performance. The below table illustrates the type of certificate you will receive on completion of the course.

60% to 75%	NPTEL Elite Certificate
76% to 89%	NPTEL Elite + Silver Certificate
Equal to or Above 90%	NPTEL Elite + Gold Certificate

 

NPTEL Cut-off

 

Conditions to get the NPTEL certificate:

1.You must get a consolidated score of 40% or above.

2.25 % of the final marks come from the assignments and 75 % from the final examination. The examination score is 75 % of the proctored certification exam score out of 100.

3.The final score is the sum of the average assignment score and examination score.

4.You will be eligible for a certificate only if the average assignment score greater than or equal to 10/25 and Examination Score greater than equal to 30/75. You will not get the certificate if one of the 2 criteria is not met, even if the Final score is greater than or equal to 40/100.

 

NPTEL Exam Fees

Regardless of the course, you must pay exam fees of Rs 1000 per course to get the certificate.

 

Did you know that you can gain Domain Expertise through SWAYAM? A new initiative of NPTEL, through which you get NPTEL Domain Certification.

 

What is NPTEL Domain Certification?

It is a micro certification wherein you can gain expert knowledge in a specific area by completing courses related to the selected field of study.

 

How to Get NPTEL Domain Certification?

You can get an NPTEL Domain certification by registering for domain-specific NPTEL courses. If you have already registered yourself on the NPTEL portal, it holds good for NPTEL Domain Certification. You may plan your NPTEL courses in any one of the following ways to accommodate it, along with your regular course of study. However, there are few conditions as below:

1.You must ensure that you complete all the core and the selected electives in a domain within three years.

2. Complete the minimum number of weeks for the specific course.

3. Secure an average score of 60 or above across courses and a minimum of 55 or above in each of the courses.

To get an NPTEL certificate, you need to take up NPTEL exam. And NPTEL exam registration costs Rs 1000 per course.  

 

5.How to apply for transfer of credits in NPTEL?

Only VTU students desiring BE Honours can transfer the credits in NPTEL. To be eligible for VTU BE Honours, you must earn at least 18 credits through SWAYAM NPTEL courses in addition to your regular academic coursework. However, the transfer of credits does not apply to other VTU students. They may enrol themselves in NPTEL courses available in SWAYAM to upgrade their knowledge.  

 

6.What is the minimum age to enrol for an NPTEL online course?

You must be above 13 years.  

 

7.How many courses can I enrol at a time?

You can enrol on any number of NPTEL courses at any given time. However, you are allowed to write exams for a maximum of only four courses per semester.    

 

8.Which NPTEL course is best?

The NPTEL course best suitable for you depends on the purpose for which you chose to do an NPTEL course. If you want to improve your job prospects then choosing NPTEL Domain Certification in your domain is the best course. Likewise, if you are a VTU BE students desiring a BE honors degree, then you may choose any of the approved NPTEL courses to earn credit above 18.

SWAYAM is an national MOOCs online portal developed by the Government of India whereas NPTEL is one of the nine national coordinators hosting online courses on SWAYAM portal.
