Part A
Unit-1 INTRODUCTION 6 hours

Necessity for sanitation, methods of domestic wastewater disposal, types of sewerage systems and their suitability.Dry weather flow, factors affecting dry weather flow, flow variations andtheir effects on design of sewerage system; computation of design flow,estimation of storm flow, rational method and empirical formulae of designof storm water drain. Time of concentration.

Unit-2 DESIGN OF SEWERS 6 hours

DESIGN OF SEWERS: Hydraulic formulae for velocity, effects of flowvariations on velocity, self cleansing and non scouring velocities, Design ofhydraulic elements for circular sewers flowing full and flowing partially full(No derivations).MATERIALS OF SEWERS: Sewer materials, shapes of sewers, laying ofsewers, joints and testing of sewers, ventilation and cleaning of sewers

Unit-3 SEWER APPURTENANCES 6 hours

Catch basins, manholes, flushing tanks, oiland grease traps, Drainage traps. Basic principles of house drainage. Typicallayout plan showing house drainage connections, maintenance of housedrainage.

Unit-4 WASTE WATER CHARACTERIZATION 6 hours

Sampling, significance,techniques and frequency. Physical, Chemical and Biological characteristics,Aerobic and Anaerobic activity, CNS cycles. BOD and COD. Theirsignificance & problems

Part B
Unit-5 DISPOSAL OF EFFLUENTS 6 hours

Disposal of Effluents by dilution, self-purification phenomenon. Oxygen sag curve, Zones of purification, Sewagefarming, sewage sickness, Effluent Disposal standards for land, surface water & ocean. Numerical Problems on Disposal of Effluents. Streeter Phelpsequation.

Unit-6 TREATMENT OF WASTE WATER 6 hours

Flow diagram of municipal wastewater treatment plant. Preliminary & Primary treatment : Screening, gritchambers, skimming tanks, primary sedimentation tanks – Design criteria &Design examples.

Unit-7 SECONDARY TREATMENT 8 hours

Suspended growth and fixed filmbioprocess. Trickling filter – theory and operation, types and designs.Activated sludge process- Principle and flow diagram, Modifications of ASP,F/M ratio. Design of ASP.

Unit-8 8 hours

Anaerobic Sludge digestion, Sludge digestion tanks, Design of Sludge dryingbeds. Low cost waste treatment method. Septic tank, Oxidation Pond andOxidation ditches – Design. Reuse and recycle of waste water.
