Unit-3 SIGHT DISTANCE 6 hours

Importants, types, Side distance at uncontrolledintersection, derivation, factors affecting side distance, IRC, AASHTOstandards, problems on above.

Unit-4 HORIZONTAL ALIGNMENT 8 hours

Definition, Checking the stability ofvehicle, while moving on horizontal curve, Super elevation, Ruling minimumand maximum radius, Assumptions – problems – method of providing superelevation for different curves – Extra widening of pavement on curves –objectives – Mechanical widening – psychological widening – Transitioncurve – objectives – Ideal requirements – Types of transition curve – Methodof evaluating length of transition curve – Setting the transition curve in thefield, set back distance on horizontal curve and problems on above

Part B
Unit-5 VERTICAL ALIGNMENT 5 hours

Gradient – Types of gradient – Design criteriaof summit and valley curve – Design of vertical curves based on SSD – OSD– Night visibility considerations – Design standards for hilly roads –problems on the above.

Unit-6 INTERSECTION DESIGN 6 hours

Principle – Atgrade and Grade separatedjunctions – Types – channelization – Features of channelising Island –median opening – Gap in median at junction.

Unit-7 ROTARY INTERSECTION 6 hours

Elements – Advantages – Disadvantages –Design guide lines – problem on the above – Grade separated intersection –Three legged inter section – Diamond inter change – Half clover leaf – cloverleaf- Advantages- Disadvantages only

Unit-8 HIGHWAY DRAINAGE 5 hours

Importance – sub surface drainage –surfacedrainage– Design of road side drives – Hydrological – Hydraulicalconsiderations and design of filter media, problems on above.
