INTRODUCTION: Definition, Land Pollution – scope and importance ofsolid waste management, functional elements of solid waste management.SOURCES: Classification and characteristics – municipal, commercial &industrial. Methods of quantification.

Unit-2 COLLECTION AND TRANSPORTATION 6 hours

Systems of collection,collection equipment, garbage chutes, transfer stations – bailing andcompacting, route optimization techniques and problems.

Unit-3 TREATMENT / PROCESSING TECHNIQUES 6 hours

Components separation,volume reduction, size reduction, chemical reduction and biologicalprocessing problems

Unit-4 INCINERATION 7 hours

Process – 3 T’s, factors affecting incineration process,incinerators – types, prevention of air pollution, pyrolsis, design criteria forincineration.

Part B
Unit-5 COMPOSTING 6 hours

Aerobic and anaerobic composting, factors affectingcomposting, Indore and Bangalore processes, mechanical and semimechanical composting processes. Vermicomposting.

Unit-6 SANITARY LAND FILLING 8 hours

Different types, trench area, Ramp and pitmethod, site selection, basic steps involved, cell design, prevention of sitepollution, leachate & gas collection and control methods, geosynthetic fabricsin sanitary land fills.

Unit-7 DISPOSAL METHODS 6 hours

Open dumping – selection of site, ocean disposal,feeding to hogs, incineration, pyrolsis, composting, sanitary land filling,merits and demerits, biomedical wastes and disposal.

Unit-8 RECYCLE AND REUSE 5 hours

Material and energy recovery operations, reusein other industries, plastic wastes, environmental significance and reuse.
