Part A
Unit-1 AGGREGATES 6 hours

Origin, classification, requirements, properties and testson road aggregates, concepts of size and gradation – design gradation,maximum aggregate size, aggregate blending by different methods to meetspecification.

Unit-2 BITUMEN AND TAR 4 hours

Origin, preparation, properties and chemicalconstitution of bituminous road binders; requirements.

Unit-3 BITUMINOUS EMULSIONS AND CUTBACKS 8 hours

Preparation,characteristics, uses and tests. Adhesion of Bituminous Binders to RoadAggregates: Adhesion failure, mechanism of stripping, tests and methods ofimproving adhesion.

Unit-4 BITUMINOUS MIXES 6 hours

Mechanical properties, dense and open texturedmixes, flexibility and brittleness, (no Hveem Stabilometer & Hubbar – FieldTests) bituminous mix, design methods using Rothfuch’s Method only and specification, Marshal mixed design criteria- voids in mineral aggregates,voids in total mix, density, flow, stability, percentage voids filled withbitumen.

Part B
Unit-5 EQUIPMENT IN HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION 6 hours

Various types ofequipment for excavation, grading and compaction – their working principle,advantages and limitations. Special equipment for bituminous and cementconcrete pavement and stabilized soil road construction.

Unit-6 SUBGRADE 6 hours

Earthwork grading and construction of embankments and cutsfor roads. Preparation of subgrade, quality control tests.

Unit-7 FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS 8 hours

Specifications of materials, constructionmethod and field control checks for various types of flexible pavementlayers.

Unit-8 CEMENT CONCRETE PAVEMENTS 8 hours

Specifications and method ofcement concrete pavement construction (PQC Importance of providing DLCas sub-base and polythene thin layer between PQC and sub-base); Qualitycontrol tests; Construction of various types of joints.
